How to Pay the M6 Toll - Payment Methods, Accounts & What to Expect

Everything you need to know about paying the M6 Toll in 2026. From the payment methods accepted at the barriers to the different account types available, plus a step-by-step guide to what happens when you arrive at the toll plaza.

Quick answer

Card only. No cash. Tap your contactless card or device at the barrier. Or set up a free Breeze or Lite account for automatic payment via ANPR (no stopping at barriers).

Cash Payment Has Been Abolished

Since May 2024, the M6 Toll no longer accepts cash payment. This was part of the switch to the zone-based pricing system and ANPR technology. There are no cash lanes at any toll plaza. If you arrive without a card, you will drive through and receive a Penalty Charge Notice unless you pay online within 2 days.

Accepted Payment Methods

Contactless Card

Most popular

Tap your debit or credit card on the contactless reader at the barrier. The most common and fastest payment method. Works with Visa, Mastercard, and Amex.

Chip and PIN

Insert your card into the reader and enter your PIN. Takes slightly longer than contactless but works with all chip-enabled cards. Useful if your contactless limit has been reached.

Contactless Device

Contactless-enabled smartphones and smartwatches can be used at the barrier readers. This includes Apple Pay and Google Pay. Hold your device to the reader as you would in a shop.

Breeze Account (ANPR)

Best value

Register your number plate and payment card. ANPR cameras read your plate automatically - you drive through a dedicated lane without stopping at any barrier. Includes a discount of 8-35% on all journeys.

Lite Account (ANPR)

New

Launched November 2025. Like Breeze but at standard prices. Register your plate for ANPR convenience without the discount. Free to set up. Best for occasional users who want to skip the barrier queues.

Fuel Cards

Selected fuel cards are accepted at the toll barriers. This includes major fleet fuel card brands. Check with your fuel card provider for compatibility. Useful for business travellers and fleet vehicles.

What to Expect at the Toll Plaza

If this is your first time using the M6 Toll, here is exactly what happens when you reach the toll barriers. There are two toll plazas: one between junctions T3 and T4 (for southbound traffic) and one between T6 and T7 (for northbound traffic).

1

Approach the toll plaza

You will see overhead signs indicating lane types. ANPR lanes (for Breeze and Lite account holders) are marked with green signs. Manual payment lanes are marked with card symbols. The speed limit drops to 30mph on approach.

2

Choose your lane

If you have a Breeze or Lite account, use an ANPR lane - the barrier will lift automatically as cameras read your number plate. If paying by card, choose any manual payment lane.

3

Make your payment

At the barrier, you will see a card reader on the driver's side. Tap your contactless card or device, or insert your chip and PIN card. The amount charged depends on how many zones you are travelling through - the system calculates this automatically.

4

Barrier lifts

Once payment is confirmed (usually 1-2 seconds for contactless), the barrier lifts and you continue your journey. The whole process typically takes under 30 seconds in a manual lane.

5

Continue your journey

Rejoin the motorway at the posted speed limit (70mph). If you need fuel or a break, Norton Canes services is located between T6 and T7.

What If You Cannot Pay at the Barrier?

If your card is declined or you drive through an ANPR lane without an account, do not panic. The ANPR system captures your number plate and you have options to resolve the payment.

Pay within 2 days - no penalty

Visit the M6 Toll website or call 0330 660 0790 (Mon-Fri 08:30-17:00) within 2 days of travel. Provide your number plate and journey details. You will only pay the standard toll charge.

After 2 days - penalty applies

If you do not pay within 2 days, a Penalty Charge Notice for £70 will be sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle. This may be reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days of issue.

Getting a Receipt

If you need a receipt for business expenses or VAT purposes, the method depends on how you paid:

  • - Breeze/Lite account holders: Log into your account online to download VAT receipts for any journey. These are generated automatically and available immediately after your journey.
  • - Pay-as-you-go: Visit the M6 Toll website and use the receipt request form. You will need your payment card details and approximate journey date/time. VAT receipts can be provided for business use.
  • - Fuel card users: Your journey will appear on your fuel card statement. Contact your fuel card provider for a VAT receipt.

How to Set Up a Breeze Account

Setting up a Breeze account takes about 5 minutes online and is completely free. Once registered, you get discounted pricing on every journey and drive through ANPR lanes without stopping. Here is how:

  1. Visit the official M6 Toll website at m6toll.co.uk and click "Create Account"
  2. Enter your vehicle registration number (you can add multiple vehicles to one account)
  3. Provide your contact details and create a password
  4. Add a payment card (debit or credit) for automatic billing
  5. Your account will be active within 24 hours - ANPR cameras will recognise your plate on your next journey

There is no minimum commitment, no monthly fee, and no cancellation charge. You only pay when you use the toll road. The discount applies automatically to every journey. For regular commuters, a Breeze account saves hundreds of pounds per year compared to standard contactless payment.
