M6 Toll Zones Explained - How Zone-Based Pricing Works

Since May 2024, the M6 Toll uses a 3-zone pricing system instead of a flat-rate toll. You only pay for the zones you travel through. This means shorter journeys cost less than the full-length crossing. Understanding the zones helps you estimate your cost before you travel.

Quick answer

3 zones. A full journey (all 3) costs £11.60 for a car. Two zones cost £9.10. One zone costs £6.70. Zones are detected automatically by ANPR - you do not need to do anything.

How Zones Are Detected

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras at every junction entry and exit point record when your vehicle enters and leaves the M6 Toll. The system automatically calculates how many zones you travel through based on your entry and exit junctions, and charges the corresponding price.

You do not need to select zones, declare your journey, or do anything different from normal driving. If you are paying by contactless card at the barrier, the correct zone-based price is calculated when you reach the toll plaza. If you have a Breeze or Lite account, the ANPR system handles everything automatically and the correct amount is charged to your registered payment method.

Important: The section south of T1 that is shared with the M42 is free. No toll is charged for this shared section. The toll only applies from T1 onwards.

Before the Zone System

Prior to May 2024, the M6 Toll used flat-rate pricing. Every vehicle paid the same toll regardless of how far they travelled on the road. A car making a short 5-mile journey from T1 to T3 paid the same price as a car making the full 27-mile journey from T1 to T8. This was widely seen as unfair to short-distance users and discouraged local traffic from using the road.

The switch to zone-based pricing was designed to encourage shorter journeys by making them cheaper. It also brought the M6 Toll into line with modern tolling practice used on toll roads across Europe, where distance-based pricing is the norm.

At the same time as introducing zones, the operator abolished cash payment and introduced ANPR technology for both payment and journey tracking. This was a fundamental modernisation of the toll road. The Lite account was later added in November 2025 to give drivers who did not want a Breeze discount the convenience of ANPR without stopping.

Zone System FAQ

How many zones does the M6 Toll have?

Three zones. Zone 1 covers the southern section (T1-T3), Zone 2 covers the central section (T3-T6), and Zone 3 covers the northern section (T6-T8). You pay for each zone you travel through.

How much does a 1-zone journey cost?

For a car, a 1-zone journey costs £6.70 with standard contactless payment, or £4.00 with a Breeze account. Motorcycles pay £3.80 standard or £2.00 Breeze. See the full pricing page for all vehicle classes.

How are zones detected?

ANPR cameras at entry and exit points automatically detect which junctions you join and leave the M6 Toll. The system calculates your zones and charges accordingly. You do not need to do anything.

When was the zone system introduced?

May 2024. It replaced the previous flat-rate pricing where all vehicles paid the same toll regardless of distance. Cash payment was abolished at the same time.
